North East Lancs Friendly League (NELF) - 2011

to be updated

North East Lancs Friendly League (NELF) - 2010

The Friendly League is a team event for swimmers in the age groups 9/10 years, who swim 25 metres of each stroke, 12 years and under, 14 years and under and open age group, who all swim 50 metres of each stroke. There is also a 100 metre Individual Medley event for the Open age group.
Ages are as of 31st December each year.
There are also four medley relay events, with a girls and boys 13 years and under team and a ladies and gents open age group team. At the end of the gala there are two mixed freestyle cannon relay, one for boys and one for girls, with four swimmers taking part, one from each age group.
There is an A lane and a B Lane for each team and only the A lane scores points. This gives us a chance to try out swimmers in different strokes.
There are usually three divisions with promotion and relegation taking place at an end of season gala.
For 2008 there are only two divisions with 5 teams in each.
We will be competing against Colne, Haslingden, Pioneer79 and Great Harwood this season.

Report from NELF gala Colne ASC 14/6/10

We travelled to Colne on 14th June for our 4th gala of the season. We were lucky to be able to use a C Lane as well so everyone got plenty of swims. We welcomed newcomers in the 9 year old age group Eric Salmon and Charlotte Dunn. The gala was really exciting with some great swims and really close with Ramsbottom winning by just 2 points! It was a great gala in the friendly spirit of the league and Colne are always a pleasure to swim against.

The return match was 8th July at Ramsbottom. The original team was much depleted due to Bury Grammar holidays, cricket and school plays. Many thanks to all the swimmers who agreed to swim at late notice.
The 10 year old age group swam brilliantly with Remi tackling the butterfly and Patrick Watson not only doing his own races, but drafted into the 13 year olds when sudden illness struck! Our 9 year old girls are shaping up nicely for next year and Ethan Smith swimming in his first gala got some brilliant times.
In the 12 year olds, Joe Smith and Ben Hargreaves did well A lane swimmers. Bens breaststroke was very impressive with a PB. Thanks to Charlotte Waddington for swimming at the last minute and comfortably winning her backstroke. Charlotte Marshall won both her events and the 13 year old relay team of Charlotte W, Olivia, Charlotte M and Moira won easily.
The 14 year old girls did well with Harriet Dawson getting a PB in the backstroke and Olivia Mallen and Megan Davies winning the breaststroke and freestyle respectively. The 14 year old boys swam well winning 3 out of 4 events.
In the Open age group, the Evans family as usual did us proud with wins in the backstroke and freestyle for both Chloe and Luke. The older age group swam well with veteran Chris Smith helping to win the Open relay. Charlotte Smith is an asset to the Team, never minding which event she swims and giving 110%. A great role model.
Overall it was a really exciting gala with many very close races both against Colne and between our A and B Lane swimmers. Ramsbottom starts, turns and finishes were much improved compared to the gala earlier in the week, but swimmers need to remember to practice their turns when training.
Many thanks to all who helped on the night especially Nicola Magee who was thrown in at the deep end as scorer and did an excellent job.

Report from NELF gala 22/2/10

Burnley 61 points Ramsbottom 59 points

An exciting start to the season away to Burnley at Padiham Pool. Burnley as always were very friendly hosts and the gala ran smoothly. As indicated by the score, there were some very close races and our swimmers gave their all.
We welcomed some younger swimmers to the NELF league with Alex Whitehead Mia Houghton and Megan Smith in the 9/10 year old girls and Joseph Fallom and Patrick Watson in the 9/10 year old boys. It was also great to see the Millward girls competing for Ramsbottom again after their return from Australia.

Briea Denny opened the gala with and impressive swim in the Ladies Open IM.

Emily Orr won both the 9/10 Butterfly and Breastroke races, Megan Smith the 9/10 backstroke and Jack Reynolds won 9/10 Freestyle.  Ben Crofts continues to go from strength to strength in the 12 year old age group which had some very strong swimmers from the Burnley side! Thanks to Ben Hargreaves for stepping in at the last minute and swimming 2 Butterfly races without complaining! Also thanks to Megan Soloman for stepping in and swimming a third butterfly race at very short notice!

Other winning swims were from Emma Crofts, Bryn Davies, Jacob Green, Kathryn Williams, Vicky Donohoe, Olivia Mallen, Matt Jackson and the Open Ladies relay.

There were some good swims from Georgia Usher in the Butterfly, Erinn Kilvington in the Butterfly and Harriet Dawson in Backstroke, both knocking seconds of heir times from last year. Charlotte Marshall put in a very impressive 50m freestyle tie in the Medley relay but was just pipped to the finish by the Burnley swimmer!

Thank you to all swimmers, poolside helpers and supporters. May I remind swimmers that they must not leave to get changed without asking the Team Manger or Whip first.
The team photo will hopefully be in the Bury Times next week.

Report from NELF gal a vs Pioneer away 1st May

Ramsbottom = 51 points
Pioneer ‘79 = 68 Points

Despite a very depleted team, Ramsbottom put up a good fight in the rematch against Pioneer ‘79 who as usual fielded several squad swimmers.  There were some nailbiting finishes and lots of personal bests.

Many thanks to Alex Cruice, Luke Evans, Vicky Donohoe and Alasdair Dawson who worked the gala into their GCSE revision timetables. Thanks also to Eleanor Jones and Chloe who had somewhere else to go on a Friday night!

Chloe Evans was superb winning both her events, as did the Crofts, Emma and Ben.  Matthew Jackson also won his breaststroke against formidable competition.
Alex Cruice just won his freestyle in an exciting finish and Vicky definitely touched first in the breaststroke even though it was called a draw!

Our 10 year old girls go from strength to strength with very little between them. Ellie Burrison won the fly and really good times were achieved by Charlotte Waddington, Charlotte Marshall  and Eleanor Soloman.

Joe Smith in the 10 year old boys showed his versatility swimming all 4 strokes! Welcome to newcomer Jack Stainton who swam well in his 25m and first attempts at 50m

The three 12 years old girl swimmers Megan Soloman, Hannah Clarke and Erinn worked really hard with Megan winning the freestyle.

Erinn Kilvington swam a great 50 m butterfly and I’m sure it must be a PB.The spare B Lane races were used by our 10 year olds who swam well especially Charlotte Marshall.

Alasdair, Luke E, Briea and Eleanor swam really well with some personal best times.

I was really proud of all my team last Friday. They swam well and had a great Team approach. Many thanks as well to the timekeepers Neil and David and Whips Jeff, Audrey and Chris. Thanks as well to Marc for coming down to give us support on a Friday evening.

Thanks to the children and supporters who gave up their Friday evening. Times will be up on the board from Tuesday.

NELF gala versus Pioneer 79 on April 2nd 2009

Ramsbottom = 51 points
Pioneer’79 = 67points

Ramsbottom swam well against a very strong Pioneer’79 team. We missed some of senior boys and junior girls.
In the Open age group, Callum Hall made a welcome return to the team winning the 50m fly. Victoria Donohoe won the Open breaststroke and Rebekah Smith the open fly. Our senior girls won the Medley Relay convincingly. Chloe Evans also won both the Open Freestyle and Backstroke. Many thanks to Alex Cruice (and his dad) for coming straight off the bus from his Lake district Trip!
In the 14 year old age group it was great to see Lydia Preston winning both the 14 year old breaststroke and freestyle. Thanks to Harriet Dawson for stepping in at the last minute to complete the 13year relay team and to Moira Davies for swimming two 50m fly races. Congratulations to Charlotte Smith on a PB in her 50m butterfly. Thanks also to Bryn Davies who swam a good time in the backstroke even though he doesn’t usually swim this event.
There were some great swims in the junior girls events particularly Olivia Mallen’s win in the 12 year breaststroke. Stevie Burrison goes from strength to strength with his times improving each gala.
Our 10 year olds swam well with newcomer James Cassidy joining the team. Ben Crofts won both his backstroke and Fly and achieved a fantastic time in the 50m B lane for his butterfly. Charlotte Marshall (only 9 years old) also swam a great 50m fly for the first time in the relay. Eleanor Soloman won her backstoke and also swam a great 25m freestyle.

Many thanks to Marc Smith who did a great job of refereeing at short notice. Also thanks all the people who agreed to help on the desk and poolside. Particular thanks to Cathie Burrison who manned the door and sweetstall single-handedly (and very competently).
Not forgetting all the swimmers and parents who supported them.

Ramsbottom Success at first NELF gala of 2009

Ramsbottom 70
Haslingden 50

The first NELF gala of the season was held at Ramsbottom on 9th March against Haslingden. Ramsbottom swimmers did well winning by 20 points – an excellent start to the season. Newcomers in the 10 year old group included Ben Maguire, Patrick Kilvington, Annabelle Worth and Charlotte Marshall all of whom swam well in their first gala for the Club.
Olivia Mallen and Megan Soloman won all the 12 year old races as did Emma Crofts, Kathryn Williams and Charlotte Smith in the 14 year old girls events.
We are missing the Millward sisters and their dependable breast stroke. Many thanks to Chloe Evans who swam the senior breaststroke despite being a backstroke swimmer! (and she won her backstroke). Heather Sellars demonstrated that not only can she swim the channel she can win 50 freestyle as well! The seniors girls had a convincing win in the Medley Relay.
The 10 year old boys Ben Crofts, Patrick Kilvington and Joe Smith gained first position in all the 10 year old events. In the 12 year olds Stevie Burrison swam a splendid 50m backstroke race. Ben Hargreaves as the very youngest in this age group swam a good 50m butterfly race.
Our strong quartet of Elliott Darlington, Tom O’Connor, Tom Jackson and George Hargreaves gained first place in all their events.
The senior boys had good competition from Haslingden with some very close races. Jamie Makki had an impressive win in the IM and the breaststoke.

Rebekah Smith one of our new Club Captains raised three cheers to Haslingden who are always a pleasant and friendly team to swim against.

Many thanks to all the parents who both helped and supported and to the swimmers themselves.

NELF match Report Ramsbottom vs Pioneer 79, 8th October 2008

Ramsbottom 45 points
Pioneer 75 points

An exciting home gala against a very strong Pioneer team.
Ramsbottom swam well with some very exciting races. Callum Hall, Luke Evans, Bryony Denny all won their races.

There were some competitive races between the Ramsbottom A & B Lanes especially amongst the men! Jamie Makki goes from strength to strength.
In the 10 year old age group James Mitchell and Lucy Empson swam very well and I can’t wait until next year when Ben crofts can go in the A Lane. Our 13 year old boys have all shot up during the summer and swim well as a team.

Other fast swims by Megan Davies in the 50 m freestyle, Tom Jackson in the 50m fly, Bryn Davies, Megan Soloman.

On a sad note the Millward sisters swam their last NELF gala. Good luck to them and Jill and Graham when they emigrate to Australia.

Thanks as always to the swimmers, parents and poolside helpers.

Next and final NELF match is away at Great Harwood Otters on Monday 29th September.

Both Jackson boys performed well winning their butterfly races and Matthew coming home in the Breaststroke.

NELF results versus Pioneer 79, 15th May 2008

Pioneer 79, 78 points
Ramsbottom, 31 points

A team decimated by SATs, A levels and school trips went to Hyndburn on 15th May.
Pioneer had a very strong team and won most of the races, however our swimmers put up a good fight.
Jamie Makki won the IM with a personal best. Youngsters Ben Hargreaves (back and free) and Lucy Empson (back and breast) swam really well with personal bests. Charlotte Smith put in a great swim in the 50m fly and Anna Baxter made a great first attempt at hers. Alasdair and Harriet Dawson both achieved PBs as did Tom Hesketh, Matthew Palmer and Megan Davies (apologies to anyone else I haven’t mentioned)

We will hopefully be able to field a stronger team for the return match in September.

Thanks to the swimmers, poolside helpers and parents.

NELF results versus Colne 28th April 2008

Ramsbottom 56 Colne 63

A very exciting and extremely friendly gala against Colne.
Nail biting finishes were the order of the day, unfortunately most in Colne’s favour!

Welcome to Lucy Empson and Jake Greaves swimming in the NELF galas for the first time.
Our backstrokers did well with Luke Waddington, Chloe Evans and Elliot Darlington all winning their events. Elliot has obviously been watching Liam Tancock’s underwater starts!

Harry Carter, Bryn Davies and Kathryn Williams all won their backstroke events and a special well done to Olivia Mallen who was very apprehensive about her first 50m butterfly race and swam a beautiful race.

Tom O’Connor’s breaststroke is a joy to watch as he gets better each time I watch him swim. Harry Carter, Olivia Mallen, Hannah Millward and Callum Hall also won their breaststroke races.

Well done to both the under 13 medley teams who won their races.

Thank you to Derek for refereeing, all the poolside helpers and the parents for all their support.

Next NELF gala is away against Pioneer 79 on Thursday 15th May. Please check notice board for team sheet.

NELF results 24th April 2008

Third NELF gala of the season was away at Haslingden. A very close fought match with the final score line

Haslingden 57 points

Ramsbottom 61 points.

There were some excellent swims by the Ramsbottom swimmers particularly senior swimmers Bryony Denny and Callum Hall. Dave Clarke showed that age is no barrier with his win in the Open breaststroke.

At the younger end, Eleanor Soloman and Ellie Burrison show great promise for the 10 year old team next year.

Tom O’Connor’s breaststroke continues to improve and Jacob Davies was a welcome addition to the team.

The impromptu Ladies Open Medley ‘B’ Team with an average of 13 years beat the Haslingden Ladies- well done Briea, Charlotte, Kathryn and Chelsea!

Thanks to all the poolside helpers and parents for their support.

NELF Gala home against Haslingden 17th March 08

Ramsbottom 54 points Haslingden 65 points

Our second NELF gala of the season was at home to Haslingden. There were some excellent swims by the Ramsbottom swimmers and some nail biting finishes.  Natalie Cross proved herself to be a good butterfly swimmer and George Hargreaves swam a personal best in the 50m freestyle. Ewan Beveridge put in a great 50m Breaststroke race against his former club. Ben Crofts swimming in his first NELF gala put in a stunning performance in the 25m and 50m (relay) butterfly at age just 9 years. At the other end of the age range, Dave Clarke won Open Men’s Breaststroke with an exciting finish.

Well done everyone.

The return fixture is Thursday 24th April 2008 at Haslingden.

NELF Gala away at Colne 6th March 08

Colne 71 points  Ramsbottom 49 points

This was the first gala of the year against a very strong team at Colne. We had some excellent swims and many personal bests.
New 9 year olds Ellie Burrison and Charlotte Waddington put in very impressive performances in their first gala for the club as did Harry Carter and James Mitchell in the 10 year old boys.
Many swimmers achieved personal bests and most races were closer that the final result would suggest.

We are looking forward to the rest of the galas this season. Due to the decreased number of clubs in the league there are only two divisions with five teams in each this year so we will be competing in 10 NELF galas and possibly the final gala at the end of the year.

Liz Dawson

Central Lancs - Junior League

The league runs between 1 March and 31 October each year, and the age groups for competitors (at 31 October) is:

  • 10 years & under (min. age 9 years)
  • 12 years & under
  • 14 years & under
  • 16 years & under

There are 2 divisions to the league and Ramsbottom currently swims in Division 1. There are 7 teams in this division, and we swim each team once per season – so we have 6 matches (3 at home and 3 away).
All the events are relay races and this usually makes for exciting matches!

Junior League win versus Radcliffe on June 12th

Ramsbottom Rascals  - 55 points

Radcliffe SC– 53 points

On Thursday 12 June Ramsbottom travelled to local rivals Radcliffe for their third Junior League gala of the season. Everyone was expecting a close match, with some exciting races, and they weren’t disappointed. After 35 thrilling races, it all came down to the final event of the night and a re-count! On this occasion it was Ramsbottom who took the honours, making them unbeaten this season in the Junior League.

It was a fine performance by everyone, especially the Ramsbottom 16 & under group who were unbeaten (again) on the night. A special mention should also go to 12 year old Lydia Preston, who swam not only in her own age, but in the 14 and 16 year age groups too. She shows excellent potential for the future.

Ramsbottom will host Stalybridge for their next fixture on Thursday 26 June, when they will be looking to continue with this form.

LOCAL SWIMMING DERBY WIN - Junior League

Ramsbottom Rascals - 66 points
Bury & Elton – 39 points

On Monday 10 March, Ramsbottom Rascals hosted local rivals Bury and Elton. The first Central Lancs Junior League gala of the season saw many Rascals swimmers, both old and new, swim their way to victory.

It was a fine performance by everyone, especially the Ramsbottom 16 & under group who won all their races. The younger swimmers, many of whom were swimming in their first competitive gala, also put in good performances. Ben Crofts (9 years) showed excellent potential.

There were many close races and much excitement on the night, but winning a total of 30 races, out of a possible 36, the Ramsbottom team showed good form and promise for the season ahead.
